Limousin and Auvergne - the Massif Central

The Limousin and Auvergne regions, on the western slopes of the Massif Central attract visitors in search of unspoiled countryside, as it is a land of trees, water and pure, clean air. Its moorlands have made the Limousin a region of horse-breeders.

Nature lovers will find this green land of woods and forests is crisscrossed by rivers; the Creuse, the Vienne and the Dordogne. The peaceful Creuse valley run alongside many villages and Crozant is where Monet painted its river. The many lakes and the rivers of this area provide endless possibilities for canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and other water sports.

Craft traditions of tapestry and carpet-making are found at Aubusson - and in the porcelain capital of Limoges enamels are exhibited in the Dubouché museum. Collonges-la-Rouge stoneware sparkles and Tulle is famous for the accordion, made here since 1919. Hundreds of ancient village churches dot the landscape as well as more imposing abbey churches and fortresses.

The Limousin has the Departments of [19] Correze, [23] Creuse and [87] Haute Vienne. The Auvergne Departments are [13] Allier, [63] Puy de Dome, [15] Cantal & [43] Haute Loire. View our selection of holiday cottages in the Massif Central below.
