THE TOWN AND REGION
Olonzac (pronounced (oh-lohn-ZACK) is a picturesque country town nestled against a pastoral backdrop of gently rolling hills and vineyards.
Situated a mere 35 kilometres from sandy beaches of the Mediterranean, and boasting 300 days of sunshine per year, Olonzac is a dream destination for adventurers, historians, gastronomes and sun worshippers alike. Unlike many parts of the southern France, the area remains largely undiscovered by the tourist masses making the local traditions and flavours all the more delightful and rewarding.
Boasting a selection of shops, restaurants and cafe/bars, the town is sufficiently well serviced that you can rest assured you won't need for anything. Tuesday is market day, when the town swells to accommodate a multitude of stalls selling the widest conceivable range of wares, including the freshest local produce- vegetables, meats, poultry, cheeses and wine and craft and general commodities. For an authentic taste of the southern French countryside life, there is no better place to be, so be sure to get there early!
Only a few minutes walk out of town you'll find the Lac de Jouarres - a beautiful lake ideal for fishing, boating, swimming, wind surfing, surfing, or even just a pleasant, relaxing walk in the sun. Alternatively, hire a bicycle from the nearby village of Homps (5 minutes drive/15 minutes walk) - the quiet open roads are ideal for cycling and there can be no better way to take in the delights of the surrounding countryside.
Olonzac is also an ideal starting point for adventures slightly further a field. The historic Citadel of Minerve and the tree-lined Canal du Midi are both only 2 minutes drive away, the magical walled city of Carcassonne only 25 minutes drive.
